Kanya Shiksha Pravesh Utsav: Initiative to bring out-of-school girls back to Education system

The Union Government on Monday launched the Kanya Shiksha Pravesh Utsav to bring out-of-school girls back to school. The Secretary of Women and Child Development Ministry, Indevar Pandey said, “The focus is all boys and girls get quality education. We are making constant efforts to ensure no child, especially girls, are deprived of their right to education”.

As per the official records only four lakh out-of-school adolescent girls are visiting the anganwadis for nutrition, education, and skilling. Addressing this particular issue at an event, Indevar Pandey said the Kanya Shiksha Pravesh Utsav is launched by the Women and Child Development Ministry in partnership with the Education Ministry. He further added that bringing out-of-school girls back to schools has been the primary aim ever since the Right to Education was enacted and practised.

Why Kanya Shiksha Pravesh Utsav?

As the facts speak for themselves, in 2018-19 there were 11.88 lakh girls which were beneficiaries under the Scheme for Adolescent Girls (SAG) scheme and the number drastically came down to 5.03 lakh in 2021. During this time period, schools were closed as the country was hit by the pandemic and it lead to a heavy downfall in the number of students coming to schools regularly. The SAG which initially took care of out-of-school girls was getting less traction and there was an immediate need for an effective scheme to grasp the situation.

With an aim to combat this problem, the Central Government has launched Kanya Shiksha Pravesh Utsav to empower women’s education. Pandey also stated that in the new scheme under Poshan 2 and Saksham Anganwadi, the government will only be taking up girls in the age group of 14 to 18 years. Girls between the age of 11 to 14 will not be coming into the Anganwadi system in new schooling which will also be taking care of the northeastern states alone and all other aspirational districts.
