Prime Minister Narendra Modi has recently announced an initiative to support and encourage the educational values among children who lost their parents due to the brutal Covid19 Pandemic. PM Modi takes over the responsibility to educate the Covid orphans by providing them full support for their schooling and higher education.
Benefits to be provided
An overall view of the financial beneficiaries to be provided to the children by the government of India is listed below:
- School students from Class 1 to Class 12 will receive a scholarship of Rs.20,000 per month.
- Students studying in government schools will be provided with free education, textbooks, and uniforms.
- Students studying in private schools will also get fee reimbursement under the Right to Education Act, 2005.
- Students studying in residential schools also fall under the same category. Free education will be provided to those studying in schools, namely, Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya.
- When a child turns 23 years old, they will avail of a lumpsum amount of 10 lakhs, with it they will receive a monthly stipend from 18 years to 23 years.
- An amount of Rs.4000 will be provided for daily expenses.
- Children are being provided an Ayushman Health Card which will cover their health expenses upto five lakh rupees.

No. of Students Approved
For the PM Cares for Children scheme, children who fit the criteria are considered to be eligible for the scheme. Children who were orphaned by the Covid-19 pandemic or have lost their primary caregiver between the 11th of March, 2020 to the 28th of February, 2022 are eligible for approval. A total number of 4,439 children have been approved for the ‘PM Cares for Children’ scheme.
PM Modi speaking about the scheme has said, “Today, the poorest of the poor are confident that they will receive benefits from government schemes. No poor person should be left out of government schemes is our utmost priority.”
Minister Smriti Irani’s words
The ‘Women and Child Development’ Minister Smriti Irani said that the nation stands in support of the children who have lost both their parents to the Covid-19 Pandemic. She added that PM Modi formed government is transferring the scholarship for school education on the day of completion of eight years is a message to the children that the nation and the Prime Minister cares for them. The Minister further added that during the Covid-19 period, a total of 80 crore citizens have received free rations.
