PM Modi laid the foundation of Major Dhyan Chand Sports University on Jan 2
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated a new sports university this week in Meerut.
The Prime Minister Office informed that a new sports university, that was launched on January 2 will be established at Salawa and Kaili villages of Sardhana town in Meerut at an estimated cost of about ₹700 crores.
The Major Dhyan Chand Sports University will contain modern and state-of-the-art sports infrastructure including synthetic Hockey ground, Football ground, Basketball/ Volleyball/ Handball/ Kabaddi grounds, Lawn tennis court, Gymnasium hall, Synthetic running stadium, Swimming pool, Multipurpose hall, and a Cycling Velodrome. The university will also have house facilities for Shooting, Squash, Gymnastics, Weightlifting, Archery, Canoeing, and Kayaking. The University will have the capacity of training 1080 sportspersons including 540 female and 540 male sportspersons.
Major Dhyan Chand, widely regarded as one of the greatest field hockey players in history, scored three Olympic gold medals for India – in 1928, 1932, and 1936 – at a time when the country dominated field hockey. Although he played for India, ‘The Wizard’ extended his influence abroad in the West, too – where he was called the “hockey’s equivalent of Muhammad Ali”.
PM Modi stated that the establishment of Major Dhyan Chand Sports University at Meerut will be a major step towards fulfilling the vision of inculcating sporting culture and establishing world-class sporting infrastructure in all parts of the country.
