NMC has taken steps to introduce Yoga and Meditation in the MBBS curriculum to enhance consciousness about the yogic practice.

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has improvised the MBBS curriculum, as NMC introduces Yoga and Meditation in the MBBS curriculum. They have aimed to bring various changes to the system of medical education. However, the most notable change is the addition of local languages into the curriculum, yoga, and Charak Shapath.

The new circular clearly reads “The new course curriculum introduced in August 2019 enriched the medical students with a sound base and balanced approach to overall aspect with the introduction of foundation courses which includes Family Adoption Programme, Yoga, Meditation, Local Language adaptation, and skills.”

The newly revised syllabus with Yoga and Meditation in the MBBS curriculum will be followed while teaching the batch of 2021-2022 who are admitted in February 2022. They will also be the first batch to take the National Exit Test (NEXT) in April 2026.

Yoga and Meditation in the MBBS curriculum

The new curriculum is soon to be implemented, which consists of a competency-based education system covering the Cognitive, Affective, and Psychomotor domains of learning. The big changes in the new curriculum are:

  1. Maharishi Charak Shapath: This change has deliberately started a debate among the medical fraternity. As per the NMC’s new curriculum, when a candidate is in medical education, Charak Shapath is recommended.
  1. Yoga: Yoga practice is expected to be done every day for an hour. This change, however, is appreciated by many.
  1. Changes in the beginning period: According to the new circular announced by NMC, the new curriculum of UG CBME will begin on February 14, 2022, in all medical colleges in the country. The duration of the first professional course has been reduced from 14 months to 12 months.

NMC has issued a circular recently informing about the inclusion of Yoga and Meditation in the MBBS curriculum and the circular reads, “Yoga practice shall be maximum for one hour every day for 10 days beginning from June 12 every year to culminate on International Yoga Day, June 21, to be celebrated in all medical schools across the country.

These may be practiced by all batches of MBBS. The yoga module will be made available to all colleges by the Under-Graduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB)-NMC. Medical colleges may have their modules. Yoga units may be inducted under the PMR department or any other department of all colleges at their discretion”. Medical students across the country shall now engage in one-hour yoga practice daily and take the nationwide exit test to complete graduation under the newly revised syllabus announced by NMC.

The addition of Yoga and Meditation in the MBBS curriculum will surely boost the awareness of Yoga and Meditation practices among the medicos, which in turn will help to signify its importance to other people as well. The government too is planning a huge celebration of the International Day of Yoga 2022, which is on Tuesday, 21st of June.
