UPSC Combined Geoscientist Prelims 2027 Notification Released: Apply Online For 127 CGSE 2027 Posts

UPSC Combined Geoscientist Prelims 2027: The Union Public Service Commission has notified the Combined Geo-Scientist Examination, 2027 (Examination Notice No. 01/2027-GEOL) on 2nd September 2026. Under the UPSC Combined Geoscientist Prelims 2026 notification, candidates can apply online for a total of 127 posts spread across the Geological Survey of India (Ministry of Mines) and the Central Ground Water Board (Ministry of Jal Shakti). The Preliminary Examination will be held on 10th January 2027, followed by the Main Examination on 19th and 20th June 2027.

The application deadline for the UPSC EPFO recruitment is approaching soon. Eligible candidates who have not yet submitted their forms should do so before the portal closes.

Vacancy Details

The UPSC Combined Geoscientist Prelims 2027 has been notified for the following categories of posts. The number of vacancies is tentative and liable to alteration.

Category-I: Geological Survey of India (Ministry of Mines)

Category-II: Central Ground Water Board (Ministry of Jal Shakti)

Note: Out of the total vacancies, 08 posts in Category-I and 02 posts in Category-II are reserved for Persons with Benchmark Disability. Appointments will be made on a temporary basis in the first instance.

Eligibility Criteria

Nationality

A candidate applying under UPSC Combined Geoscientist Prelims 2027 must be a citizen of India, or a subject of Nepal or Bhutan, or a Tibetan refugee who came to India before 1st January 1962 with the intention of settling permanently, or a person of Indian origin migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, certain East African countries or Vietnam with the intention of settling permanently in India.

Age Limit

• A candidate must have attained the age of 21 years and must not have attained the age of 32 years as on 1st January 2027, that is, the candidate must be born not earlier than 2nd January 1995 and not later than 1st January 2006.
• The upper age limit is relaxable by 5 years for SC/ ST candidates, 3 years for OBC candidates, and up to 10 years for Persons with Benchmark Disability, besides other relaxations for government servants, Ex-servicemen and Defence Services personnel disabled in operations, as detailed in the official notification.

Minimum Educational Qualification

The educational qualification required for the UPSC Combined Geoscientist Prelims 2027 notification differs by post and stream:

• Geologist (GSI): Master’s degree in Geological Science/ Geology/ Applied Geology/ Geo-Exploration/ Mineral Exploration/ Engineering Geology/ Marine Geology/ Earth Science and Resource Management/ Oceanography and Coastal Areas Studies/ Petroleum Geosciences/ Geochemistry.
• Geophysicist (GSI) and Scientist ‘B’ (Geophysics) (CGWB): M.Sc. in Physics/ Applied Physics/ Geophysics/ Exploration Geophysics/ Applied Geophysics/ Marine Geophysics/ Applied Geophysics (Tech.).
• Chemist (GSI) and Scientist ‘B’ (Chemical) (CGWB): M.Sc. in Chemistry/ Applied Chemistry/ Analytical Chemistry.
• Scientist ‘B’ (Hydrogeology) and Assistant Hydrogeologist (CGWB): Master’s degree in Geology/ Applied Geology/ Marine Geology/ Hydrogeology.
• Assistant Chemist (GSI and CGWB): M.Sc./ Integrated M.Sc. in Chemistry/ Applied Chemistry/ Analytical Chemistry/ Physical Chemistry/ Inorganic Chemistry/ Organic Chemistry/ Hydro-Chemistry/ Industrial Chemistry.
• Assistant Geologist (GSI): Master’s/ Integrated Master’s degree in Geology/ Applied Geology/ Mineral Exploration/ Marine Geology/ Earth Science.
• Assistant Geophysicist (GSI and CGWB): M.Sc./ M.Sc.(Tech)/ Integrated M.Sc. in Geophysics/ Exploration Geophysics/ Applied Geophysics/ Geo-Exploration/ Marine Geophysics/ Physics/ Applied Physics/ Applied Geology.

Note: All degrees must be from a University incorporated by an Act of the Central or State Legislature, or an educational institution established by an Act of Parliament, or a deemed university under the UGC Act, 1956.

Selection Process

The candidates applying under UPSC Combined Geoscientist Prelims 2027 will be selected through a three-stage process under the Combined Geo-Scientist Examination, 2027:

• Stage-I: Combined Geo-Scientist (Preliminary) Examination, an objective-type screening test carrying 400 marks.
• Stage-II: Combined Geo-Scientist (Main) Examination, a conventional/descriptive-type test carrying 600 marks.
• Stage-III: Personality Test/ Interview carrying 200 marks.

Marks secured in both the Preliminary and Main Examinations will be counted for the final merit, along with the Personality Test marks.

Exam Pattern

The Preliminary Examination consists of two objective-type (multiple choice) papers, set in English only, and will be held on 10th January 2027. The scheme varies according to the stream chosen by the candidate.

Stream-I: Geology/ Hydrogeology (for Geologist/ Assistant Geologist and Scientist ‘B’ Hydrogeology/ Assistant Hydrogeologist posts)

Stream-II: Geophysics (for Geophysicist/ Assistant Geophysicist posts)

Stream-III: Chemistry (for Chemist/ Assistant Chemist posts)

Note:

• There is a penalty (negative marking) of one-third of the marks assigned to a question for every wrong answer, and calculators are not permitted in the objective-type papers.
• The UPSC Combined Geoscientist Prelims 2027 will be held at 21 centres, including Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Cuttack, Delhi, Dispur, Ghaziabad, Gurugram, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Patna, Prayagraj, Shillong, Shimla and Thiruvananthapuram.
• After UPSC Combined Geoscientist Prelims 2027, the Mains Examination will be held at Bhopal, Chennai, Delhi, Dispur, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai and Shimla.

Documents Required

Candidates should keep scanned copies of the following documents ready while filling up the Universal Registration Number (URN) and Common Application Form (CAF):

• Certificate of Age
• Certificate of Educational Qualification
• Certificate in support of claim to belong to Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, Economically Weaker Section or Other Backward Classes, where applicable
• Certificate in support of claim for age/ fee concession, wherever applicable
• Certificate in support of being a person with benchmark disability, wherever applicable

Steps to Apply for UPSC Combined Geoscientist Prelims 2027

• Visit the application portal by clicking on the link given below in the “Important Links” section.
• Create an account and generate a Universal Registration Number (URN), which is common for all Commission examinations.
• Complete the Universal Registration and the Common Application Form (CAF) with personal, educational and other details.
• Fill up the Examination Specific Module for the Combined Geo-Scientist Examination, 2027, including fee and exam centre preference.
• Upload the photograph, live photo capture, signature and other required documents as per the instructions given on the portal.
• Pay the examination fee, if applicable, and submit the application of UPSC Combined Geoscientist Prelims 2027

Candidates cannot withdraw an application once it is submitted, and no correction or alteration is allowed after submission.

Application Fee

Fee can be paid only through net banking or Visa/ Master/ RuPay Credit/ Debit Card/ UPI payment. Fee once paid is not refundable, nor can it be held in reserve for any other examination.
