What sparked the controversy in Assam HSLC Board Exam 2025?

A 3-mark question presenting a hypothetical situation sparked a controversy on the social media platform. The question read “Suppose, the government has set up a hospital in a village called Dambuk. The hospital provides free treatment to the Hindus. People of other religions have to bear the cost of treatment themselves. Can the government take such measures in a country like India? Give your opinion.”

Public Opinion

The situation escalated when Journalist Afrida Hussain voiced her concerns on X (formerly Twitter) with the caption, “Is this the kind of education we want for our students? A Class 10 board exam question by SEBA asks whether the government can set up a hospital providing free treatment only to Hindus while others have to pay. Seriously? Why are students being exposed to divisive hypotheticals instead of learning about the equality and secularism protected by our Constitution?”

Following this, netizens and educators started voicing their concerns as well, adamantly arguing that education should not allow students to gain a distorted view of the society but rather allow them to foster a mindset of constructive discussions and ethical reasoning.

Response from the Authority

The Assam State School Education Board (ASSEB), is under high scrutiny and pressure to handle the situation. As of now, no official statement has been released. The concerns of public have only grown further and thus, needs to be addressed as soon as possible.

Debate on Education and Ethics

The real question about how education has a direct influence on the minds of young people. Promoting critical thinking is acceptable however, whatever is being presented to the students must be scrutinized to ensure that the ideologies of secularism and equality are followed.
