Dibrugarh University shocking ragging incident; victim jumps from 2nd floor to save himself

Inhuman ragging incident at Dibrugarh University, the victim student was admitted to ICU.

A shocking incident of ragging from Dibrugarh university came to exposure on 27th November when a Post-Graduate student of the Commerce Department was tortured and ragged by some senior students of the University. The victim is a border of Padmanath Gohain Baruah (PNGB) Chatra Nivas was allegedly ragged by a group of seniors and some ex-students who physically and mentally tortured the victim student, asked him to clean the utensils more.

The inhuman action against him was so hard on him that the victim jumped off the second floor of the Hostel’s B- Block building for his safety as a consequence of which the student got several injuries on his body, the victim student was immediately rushed to the Aditya Nursing Home where he was admitted to the ICU.

As the victim had alleged on the 27th of November he was brutally beaten because the accused person came to know that he had earlier registered a complaint against the seniors for ragging.

The incident on the 27th of November was not the only time the student was tortured, earlier also multiple times the student was forced into a moral and physical breakdown. The victim had earlier filed a complaint on 17th November 2022 to his warden but unfortunately, no action was taken by the hostel warden.

The parents of the victim have now raised questions at the University Authorities about why no actions were taken when their son had already given a written complaint to the warden, also claimed that there are more students who are victims of such inhuman ragging by some seniors, the parents have now filed an FIR and has asked the university to take immediate actions.

Action by Police and Dibrugarh University authorities

The DC of Dibrugarh Biswajit Pegu has ordered a Megestrial inquiry into the incident which will be led by ADC Sanghamitra Baruah. Till now the police have arrested 3 students identified as Pranjit Baruah, Niranjan Thakur, and Simanta Hazarika, another accused named Rahul Chetry was an Ex-student and former member of the Dibrugarh University Union Body is still absconding.

The Dibrugarh University has released an official notification that 18 students have been expelled from the university. The register of the Dibrugarh university Dr. H C Mahanta said ” We regret the incident that happened yesterday at the University. It should not have taken place. It’s really a shameful event in the University’s History”.

In this case, CM Assam tweeted, “It has come to notice that a Dibrugarh University student is hurt in an alleged case of ragging. A close watch was maintained and follow-up action was coordinated with the district admin. Efforts on to nab the accused, the victim being provided medical care”.

Also, the Education Minister of Assam Ranoj Pegu has condemned the incident saying that such activities won’t be tolerated. “I strongly condemn the ragging incident in Dibrugarh University where a student has been hurt grievously. Asking Dibrugarh University authority and police to take strong action. We will not tolerate such activities,” said Assam education minister Ranoj Pegu. 

The Assam education minister added: “I am also asking university authorities to be vigilant and take prompt action whenever any attempt of ragging is reported. Ex-students should not be allowed to stay in hostels.”
