The admission is conducted through a two-tier process involving a Central Application Process (CAP) and counselling, with a screening test known as the Gauhati University Research Eligibility Test or GURET 2025 utilized for candidates without NET qualifications. The university offers a wide range of PhD programs across multiple disciplines with several vacancies available.

Eligibility Criteria
- Candidates must have a postgraduate degree or its equivalent from Gauhati University or a recognized university/ institute, securing not less than 55% marks or equivalent grade in the concerned subject or an allied subject as recognized by the respective department.
- For SC/ ST/ OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) candidates or differently-abled candidates (with at least 40% disability), a minimum of 50% marks or equivalent grade is required.
- Relaxation in eligibility marks is in accordance with applicable government rules of Assam.
- Students appearing or having appeared in their postgraduate final examinations may also apply but must submit their results before the final selection list is prepared.
- Apart from these, special eligibility criteria for Medical Sciences and allied health courses under LGBRIMH apply as per regulatory bodies for certain courses under Gauhati University PhD admission 2025.
International Applicants
- Must have passed a master’s level examination from a UGC-recognized university/institute securing at least 55% or equivalent grade.
- Must have completed formal education equivalent to 17 years including 2 years of master’s level education.
- Demonstration of English proficiency via standardized tests like TOEFL or IELTS or evidence of receiving education in English over a significant period.
- Consideration of research proposal merit, reference letters, and GRE scores by the Departmental Research Committee (DRC).
- No application fee applicable for international applicants.
Selection Process
The Gauhati University PhD admission 2025 is conducted in multiple phases:
- First phase: Admission of UGC-NET and CSIR-NET qualified candidates to vacant seats (already over)
- Second phase: Admission through the GURET 2025 for candidates in departments with unfilled vacancies or where NET qualified candidates are unavailable.

Exam Pattern
- As per notification of Gauhati University PhD admission 2025, GURET 2025 will be conducted on 3rd August 2025.
- It will be a 2-hour examination comprising 100 multiple-choice questions.
- One mark is awarded for every correct answer, and 0.25 marks are deducted for each wrong answer.
- There is no negative marking for un-attempted questions.
- The syllabus is based on the concerned master’s degree subject.

Application Fees
- Application fee for Gauhati University PhD admission 2025 is Rs. 1500 per subject (excluding bank transaction fee), paid online via the SAMARTH portal.
- For candidates appearing in two subjects, the fee is Rs. 2500 plus bank charges.
- No application fee for international applicants.
