Seven IITs stepped back from ‘THE World University Rankings 2023’, IISc ranks 300th

75 Indian Institutions got featured in THE World University Rankings 2023 and IITs have stepped back from participating. Read the complete article to get the detailed information.

Times Higher Education (THE) rankings: The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2023 were announced on the 11th of October, 2022, where a total of 75 Indian Institutes and Universities were able to secure a notable position in the rank list. The number of institutions collectively that participated in THE World University Rankings 2023, is 1799. This year, the graph of Indian Institutes and Universities which made up the top list has inclined as compared to the years 2020 and 2021.

THE Ranking

Here is the list of some Institutes which received Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2023:

Out of the total sum of 75 Indian Institutes and Universities listed in THE World University Rankings 2023, one is the Indian Institute of Science (IISc.), seven are the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and two are the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISERs). The Universities are Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Jamia Millia Islamia, Jamia Hamdard University, Banaras Hindu University, Jadavpur University, and Aligarh Muslim University.

7 IITs stepped back, why?

The otherwise picture of THE World University Rankings 2023 shows that some of the IITs have stepped back from participating in the ranking since the year 2020. The IITs are namely, IIT Delhi, IIT Roorkee, IIT Madras, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Bombay, IIT Kanpur, and IIT Guwahati.

An official joint statement from the institutes said that “The seven IITs will not participate in THE World University Rankings 2023. They will reconsider their decision next year if Times Higher Education is able to convince them about the parameters and transparency in their ranking process”.
