One Nation One Subscription: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his Independence Day speech of 2022, emphasized the importance of research and development for India’s progress. He called for a “Jai Anusandhan” movement to foster innovation and scientific inquiry. To give a momentum and fulfil the goal, the Modi government has come up with the new initiative of One Nation One Subscription, to make easier for researchers conducting their research.

The One Nation One Subscription scheme aims to deliver easier methods to buy journals from a single platform. Further, it also allows a single fee to purchase journals from various reputed publishing house. All the information regarding the new scheme and its benefits are discussed here.

One Nation One Subscription: Detail information

The government has introduced “One Nation One Subscription,” scheme to provide universal access to scholarly research articles and journals for students, faculty, and researchers in all government-funded higher education institutions and research organizations. This initiative aims to foster a culture of research and innovation by making high-quality research resources accessible to a wider audience.

The information regarding the scheme was officially released on 25th November, 2024, that will be implemented digitally from 1st of January, 2025. The coordination will be done by the Information and Library Network (INFLIBNET) and monitored by the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF).

A significant budget of approximately Rs. 6,000 crore has been allocated for the next three years to support this initiative. By providing access to over 13,000 e-journals from 30 major international publishers, the government aims to empower researchers and contribute to India’s growth as a knowledge-based economy.

How will the scheme benefit students?

The One Nation One Subscription scheme will provide access to a vast collection of 13,000 e-journals from renowned international publishers like Elsevier, Springer Nature, and Wiley Blackwell. This extensive resource will be available to over 6,300 government-funded higher education and research institutions across the country.

The initiative is poised to benefit a significant number of individuals, estimated to be around 1.8 crore. This includes students, faculty, researchers, and scientists from various disciplines, particularly those residing in smaller cities and towns. By providing access to top-tier international journals, the scheme aims to foster research and innovation in both core and interdisciplinary fields.

A new initiative

Earlier the institutions individually negotiated subscriptions with publishers, One Nation One Subscription schemes consolidates the process, leveraging collective bargaining power to secure better deals. This centralized approach eliminates disparities in access, ensuring that students, faculty, and researchers across the country, regardless of their institutional affiliation, have equal opportunities to engage with cutting-edge research.
