The National Testing Agency (NTA) released a notification on the 15th of this month, announcing the conduct of the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Mains-2023) Session-1 between the 24th to 31st of January, 2023. Following the notification, many students were seen putting out their words as they were not happy with the date of the examination.
Also, many JEE aspirants are feeling tense as NTA has asked for a minimum of 75% marks in the Class 12 examination to be eligible to appear in the JEE Mains-2023. Hence, Advocate Anubha Shrivastava Sahai has filed a PIL in the Bombay High Court, seeking the intervention of the court in the matter.

Demands of JEE aspirants
Going through the issues or grievances raised by JEE aspirants on various social media platforms, we can come up with the following major reasons for the protests:
- Usually, the notification for JEE examination comes 3 to 4 months prior to the commencement of the examination. But this time, students hardly have a month’s time to act and get prepared for the entrance test. Hence, a majority of the students got stressed and hereby demanded the postponement of the exam.
- Secondly, the schedule of the entrance test will either coincide with practical, pre-boards, and board exams or will be somewhat nearby. And so, students preparing for both are now having a hard time.
- Next, NTA has asked for atleast 75% marks in the Class 12 examination to appear in JEE Mains-2023. Though this is not a new eligibility condition, NTA has been skipping it for the last few years due to Covid-19 and its impact on studies and results eventually. But the issue is, many students were not aware of the fact that eligibility conditions will be re-introduced this year. And now, some of the students who have marks below it have no options as they have already spent their money and time on JEE preparation. In fact, the forms for repeat or improvement exams are also closed by this time for a majority of the Exam Boards.
- Before the pandemic, there was also a substitute eligibility condition that allowed candidates in the top 20 percentile in the class 12th exam conducted by the respective board to appear in JEE, even without securing 75% or more. This rule was especially helpful for students coming from state boards, where average performance is quite low. But now, without that criteria, many JEE aspirants will surely have to give up their dreams in the middle of the ongoing academic session.
PIL in Bombay High Court
A child rights activist and President of the India-Wide Parents Association (IWPA) has filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) this Monday in the Bombay High Court seeking to defer the scheduled JEE Mains-2023 and to provide relaxation in the eligibility conditions. In the PIL filed by Anubha Shrivastava Sahai, she challenged the decision taken by concerned authorities, which dragged a majority of the aspirants looking for JEE Mains-2023 into problems.
Speaking to the correspondents from ABP Live, the advocate said “This year notification of JEE Main Exam was released at very short notice and due to this several students who are appearing for boards were under a lot of pressure. Some board practicals and Viva are scheduled during the JEE MAINS-2023, as well as the National Defence Academy Services Selection Board Interview.”
“Several students have approached me regarding this issue. They have made representation to the authorities. However, their concerns have not been addressed, and we were left with no option but to approach the court. The government should consider their genuine demands and provide relief…,” she added.

The application portal for Session 1 of JEE Mains-2023 is open for the candidates since the 15th of December, 2022, and the last date to apply for the same is on the 12th of January, 2023. All the candidates who wish to apply can follow the steps mentioned below:
- Candidates will need to visit the official website first
- On the homepage, click on the “JEE(Main) 2023 Session 1 Application” link
- Then next click on “new registration” and read the mentioned instructions carefully
- Then enter your details to register yourself
- Once you get the application number and password, log in to fill out the application form
- Fill out the application form with the essential details and upload the documents
- Save your details to proceed and after entering all the details, submit your form and pay the application fees
- Don’t forget to download the application form and the payment receipt for future reference
