UGC grants Autonomous status to Darrang College for 2025-30; Know more

A proud achievement for Tezpur: Darrang College gets UGC autonomous status for 2025–2030, allowing greater academic and administrative flexibility.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has conferred autonomous status to Darrang College, Tezpur, for five years. This approval was granted in the Commission meeting held on 14 May 2025. The college, affiliated with Gauhati University, will now function as an autonomous institution from the academic year 2025–26 to 2029–30.

Darrang College submitted the proposal for autonomy, which was reviewed by the Standing Committee on Autonomous Colleges. Following the Committee’s recommendation, the UGC approved the status under Clause 7.4 of the UGC (Conferment of Autonomous Status Upon Colleges and Measures for Maintenance of Standards in Autonomous Colleges) Regulations, 2023.

Darrang College: Education Hub of Sonitpur

Established in 1945, Darrang College is one of the oldest and most reputed institutions of higher education in Assam. It is located in Tezpur of Sonitpur district, and has played a significant role in spreading quality education in the region. Over the decades, the college has built a strong academic foundation and earned a reputation for excellence in both curricular and extracurricular fields.

The college is named after the historic Darrang district and is often referred to as the “Nalanda of the North Bank” for its academic achievements. It has also received recognition and support under various central and state government schemes aimed at developing higher education.

Courses offered at Darrang College

Darrang College offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across Arts, Science, and Commerce streams. It also hosts career-oriented and self-financed courses to meet the evolving academic and professional needs of students.

The college has consistently worked towards upgrading its infrastructure, academic resources, and student support services. With the new autonomous status, Darrang College will now have greater academic flexibility to design its curriculum, introduce innovative teaching methods, and conduct examinations independently.

In the letter of the conferment of autonomous status to Darrang College, Gauhati University has been requested to issue an official notification within 30 days to formalise the grant of autonomy. This is to be done following the UGC Regulations mentioned above.

As an autonomous college, Darrang College must comply with all provisions laid out in the UGC Regulations for Autonomous Colleges, 2023. The institution is expected to maintain the academic and administrative standards as per the guidelines. Failure to adhere to the regulations may lead to action under Clause 13 of the same regulations.
