MIT Udupi professor triggers controversy: Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT), Udupi, Karnataka is regarded as one of the most prestigious institutes in our country, is facing controversy as one professor commented inappropriate language towards a student. The video has been viral all over social media where one professor is seen calling the student, as the name of Kasab, the terrorist who was hanged in the Mumbai Blast case in 2008. The video has been circulated as a storm in social media where many have voiced out against the teacher.
The student inside the class was mentally disturbed by how the MIT Udupi professor spoke about him in front of others. Later, when the student spoke about his uneasiness with the teacher itself, the professor was trying to pacify him by saying that he was not denoting him seriously. The buzz about the whole scenario has forced the administration not to allow the MIT Udupi professor to take any classes and has said will not support such a nuisance on the institution’s premises.

MIT Udupi professor denotes a student as a Terrorist: The reality behind the viral video
The situation after this incident has become political. The professor, in the class, denoted the student as Kasab because the name of the student was similar to the name of the terrorist. As mentioned in many reports, he said jokingly. But the student got furious over the issue. The student retaliated against the comment made by the professor.
In the circulated video, the professor says,” It’s a funny thing.” The student confronts him by saying,” No it’s not, Sir. It’s not. 26/11 was not funny, calling someone a terrorist is not funny. Being a Muslim in this country and facing all of this every day is not funny. No, these jokes are not acceptable. You cannot joke about my religion in such a derogatory manner.”
As the MIT Udupi professor tried to pacify him by saying,” You are just like my kid”, the student further fumes and says,” No! If my father says, I will disown him.” As the professor still kept saying that he was joking, the student was not convinced at all and continuously said that he can’t accept such jokes.
The teacher again tried to make things normal by saying he is just like his son, but the student said,” No. will you talk to your son like that? Will you call him by the name of a terrorist?” the teacher said no, he promptly said, ” Done then. How can you call me like that in front of so many people in the class?”
As the professor further apologized in front of everyone he reminded him that he was after all a teacher, and must work like a professional. He must not use such words in front of him. Toward the end, as the MIT Udupi professor repeatedly said sorry and apologized, the student said,” Sir, sorry doesn’t change how you think, how you portray yourself here. “
The political discourse of the scenario
The viral video of the MIT Udupi professor also pushed many political leaders to jump into the case. The Chairman of the Media & Publicity Department of All India Congress Committee (AICC), Pawan Khera, blamed the ruling government for creating such an atmosphere in the country.
The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief, Asaduddin Owaisi also compared such incidents regarding MIT Karnatak professor or earlier Hijab Ban cases, which has been targetted towards the minority community of this country.
The state education minister of Karnataka BC Nagesh said that such comment should not have poured in but was not a serious thing to dwell in. He said that many of the leaders comment to others as Ravan even in the Constituent Assembly, so such comments shouldn’t become an issue.
MIT in an action mode
Many media reports have mentioned that the MIT Udupi professor has already issued an unconditional apology to the student and the institution’s authority. Further, the institution has debarred the teacher to take any further classes. It has further been said that constitutional values will be always taken into consideration and unity will be maintained on the campus.
